Why the practice exists
Grant-funded founders are often building a business and a reporting file at the same time. Receipts arrive in different formats, suppliers describe work loosely, and a sensible purchase may sit under the wrong approved line. Buildstreambase was formed to examine that evidence early—before a correctable record problem becomes a breach allegation.
The people behind the review
Engagements are led by Ayanda Mbeki, an accounting and grant-compliance practitioner with experience reviewing small-enterprise expenditure, supplier records and programme close-outs. Specialist tax or legal questions are referred rather than disguised as audit findings.
Our work is informed by the realities of South African startups: VAT registration can change mid-grant, loadshedding affects equipment choices, supplier capacity varies, and founders sometimes use an operating account before a dedicated grant account is opened. Context is recorded, but it never replaces evidence.
How we work
We are independent, precise and proportionate. A missing proof of payment is not described as fraud. A founder’s explanation is not treated as proof. Every exception identifies the condition, the record examined, the response received and the amount affected.
We value candour, confidentiality and useful writing. Reports are designed to help a reader decide what happened and what must happen next—not to impress them with accounting language.
